Interventional Radiology:

The Future of Medicine, Today

Welcome to the most advanced field of modern medicine — Vascular & Interventional Radiology (VIR). Many conditions once requiring open surgery can now be treated WITHOUT A SCALPEL using minimally invasive techniques, offering faster recoveries, fewer risks, and incredible precision.

What is Vascular & Interventional Radiology?

VIR, or simply IR, uses advanced imaging such as ultrasound, CT/MRI, and fluoroscopy (live x-ray) to guide small instruments inside the body, diagnosing and treating disease with minimal trauma. Instead of large incisions, IR procedures use a small skin puncture (the size of an IV) to perform precise, targeted treatments.

How is IR Different from Surgery?

  • Minimally Invasive: KNIFELESS SURGERY. Just a tiny skin puncture.
  • Less Pain & Scarring: Smaller wounds mean less pain, little to no scarring, and lower infection risk.
  • Faster Recovery: Most IR procedures can be done safely as an outpatient without a hospital stay and a quick return to normal life.
  • Higher Precision, Lower Risk: Imaging ensures pinpoint accuracy, preserving healthy tissue.

IR: Pioneering Modern Medicine

IR has revolutionized medical treatment with pioneering innovations such as:

  • Angioplasty & Stenting: IR physicians invented these life-saving procedures, which restore circulation and often eliminate the need for open-heart surgery.
  • Tumor Ablation: Destroys cancer cells using heat or cold without major surgery.
  • Uterine Fibroid Embolization: A minimally invasive alternative to hysterectomy for the treatment of fibroids.
  • Stroke Intervention: Removes blood clots quickly, dramatically improving patient outcomes.
  • Chemoembolization: Delivers chemotherapy directly to tumors, reducing damage to healthy tissue.

Why Haven’t I Heard of IR?

Despite its breakthroughs, IR has traditionally been hospital-based, working behind the scenes as the “doctor’s doctor.” Unlike other specialties, IR physicians rarely had outpatient offices…until now.

360 Vascular Institute is the first office-based Interventional Radiology practice in Ohio, making these cutting-edge treatments more accessible than ever.

Education and Training of an IR

Becoming an IR requires years of rigorous medical training. After completing 4 years of college and 4 years of medical school, IR physicians undergo a 5 year residency training in Diagnostic Radiology, followed by an additional fellowship in Interventional Radiology for 1-2 years, totaling 15 years of education after high school. IR specialists are highly skilled in image-guided procedures, vascular interventions, and advanced minimally invasive treatments, making them among the most expertly trained physicians in modern medicine. As a result, IR is considered one of the most competitive specialities in medicine.

Why Choose IR?

IR prioritizes your comfort, safety, and recovery. If surgery has been recommended, ask if an IR procedure could be a better alternative. You may be able to skip the operating room and achieve outstanding results with less downtime.
